Ingredients
- Taytsa (any desired amount)
- Halloumi cheese
- Pita bread
- Oregano
- Olive oil
- Honey
- Garlic powder
- Paprika
Here’s an easy recipe using taytsa that takes about 10-15 minutes overall to make.
Halloumi is a soft cheese from Cyprus, made out of a mix of goat and sheep's milk. It has a rubbery texture and is often grilled and used as a meat substitute!
The halloumi:
- Cut halloumi into ½ inch slices and dry with a paper towel.
- Coat cheese slices with olive oil and add them to a skillet (also coated and preheated to medium heat).
- Add the seasonings. I use oregano, garlic powder, paprika and pepper, but what you add is up to you- the Taytsa flavor is gonna pop out anyway!
- After a few minutes, flip over the slices to see if they’re browning on the bottom, and if so, flip them over so the other side can fry.
The pita:
- Cut a slice of pita in half (or thirds/quarters if desired) and open it into a pocket.
- Add a small amount of olive oil to a skillet. Sprinkle the pita with salt and oregano (I like to add sesame seeds to mine too).
- Toast both sides of the pita in the skillet.
- After the pita has been toasted, it’s Taytsa time! Coat the inside with as much Taytsa as desired.
The assembly:
- Once your pita pocket has been coated with Taytsa on the inside, it’s time to add the halloumi. I’ve only ever added halloumi to mine, but there are tons of possibilities as to things that could be added to it- you could add grilled vegetables, olives, hummus, or something like pomegranate seeds if you want some more sweetness!
- After adding the halloumi, drizzle lightly with honey. If you want an overall sweeter taste, adding some honey to the halloumi whilst you fry it will do too!
- Enjoy!
